Last month I was in Spain with my friend Jessica. The combination of us two is a warranty for fun, no mater what, so of course we has many fabulous adventures. Alicante as a city was a bit disappointing, but that did not stop us from having a good time.
We started our vacation by a rather tiring climb to the top of the hill to see some ruins and enjoy the view. This hill is by far one of the most beautiful spots of the city. It took us ages to reach the top (maybe our flip flops were not the best climbing gear), mainly because the route was quite maze-like and confusing. After a pit stop for some ice cream we went to see the view over the (honestly, not all too nice) city. It was only the next day that we found out that there was a funicular to go to the top and back. Fail.
Later, while exploring the sea side a bit, we discovered a replica of a Spanish war ship with a terrace on the deck. Wine in pirate style, how could we resist?
The next day, we went looking for a quarter of the city that was supposed to be very pretty and artistic, with white and blue houses like they have in Greece. We knew the vague direction, so we just started walking to find it. We did not succeed this day, but we did find some nice other spots.
One very exciting thing we did during our trip was snorkelling. First, we went to the island Tabarca with a small and very fast (party) boat. There, swam to a cave and later around the coast of the island. We ended the activity with a drink and a snack on the boat and then went back to the main land, party music blasting and full speed. It was a really cool experience and we had a lot of fun. After returning, we took a nice long nap on the beach and got completely sunburned. Oops!
Later on in the trip, we visited the city Elche to see a park with palm trees that is on the UNESCO list. We expected this to be a little village where we could easily find the park, but actually it was quite a big place and finding the park was a bit of a challenge, since signposts where nowhere to be found most of the time. Every time we asked someone for directions, they just told us we should apply sun cream (factor 50) because else we were going to get sunburned. Good advice, but what about those directions to the park? When we finally found the place, it turned out they were about to close it, so we could only visit very shortly. A shame, because it was beautiful.
In case you were wondering, we did find the quarter with the Greek-like houses at some point. It was worth a visit indeed. Very small, but very cute. A lot of climbing though. Our Dutch legs are not used to hills like this. Luckily, there is always a cold jug of sangria waiting at the end of every climb.
On our last day we opted for a chill day on Tabarca. In just an hour or so, we were on the teeny tiny island. We walked around it completely and this only took us one hour. The island has a lot on dry land and a "city centre" consisting of one street only. For the rest it's restaurants and beaches. No matter how small the island is, it still manages to be extremely packed on one end of it, and calm and quiet on the other end of it. It was the perfect trip for our last day in Spain.
Although Alicante itself was not so interesting, I feel like we saw a lot and we had a very good trip. But then again, a vacation is always nice when you travel in good company.
